Design and Styling
Penned by designer Taru Lahti, the Focus Ghia embraced a fluid, aerodynamic form that departed from the angular aesthetics of the 1980s. Its smooth curves and organic shapes were early expressions of what would become Ford's "New Edge" design language, characterized by the fusion of soft contours with sharp intersecting lines. This design philosophy would later influence production models like the Ford Ka, Puma, and the first-generation Focus.
The roadster featured a removable hardtop that could be stowed under a hatch in the rear deck, showcasing its versatility. Distinctive 18-inch tri-spoke wheels hinted at designs that would appear on subsequent Ford models, such as the redesigned Ford Probe.

Beneath its sculpted exterior, the Focus Ghia was built on the chassis of the Escort Cosworth RS, a rally-bred performance icon. It was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter Cosworth YB four-cylinder engine, delivering 227 horsepower to all four wheels. Weighing just over 2,100 pounds, thanks to its carbon fiber-composite body, the concept promised exhilarating performance and agility.

Inside, the Focus Ghia continued its avant-garde theme with an asymmetrical design. The steering wheel was crafted from a single piece of wood, connected to the column by two bent metal tubes, exuding a minimalist yet sophisticated aesthetic. The dashboard flowed seamlessly into the door panels, accented by brushed aluminum and dark blue finishes. Leather-wrapped seats and armrests, along with wooden floorboards, added a touch of luxury to the futuristic cabin.
Legacy and Influence
While the Focus Ghia remained a one-off concept, its design and engineering innovations had a lasting impact on Ford's production vehicles. Elements of its styling and the New Edge design language became prominent in models throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
After its tenure as a design study, the Focus Ghia was auctioned in 2002, fetching $1 million. The proceeds contributed to the Ford Fund, established in 1949 to support charitable initiatives across the United States and in over 40 countries worldwide.
