SVT Focus Competition Concept

A Showcase of Grassroots Motorsports Potential

Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) unveiled the SVT Focus Competition concept today at the Specialty Equipment Market Association's (SEMA) International Auto Salon. Introduced by Tom Scarpello, SVT’s sales and marketing manager, this concept highlights the SVT Focus’ capabilities as a platform for grassroots motorsports, including autocross, drag racing, club racing, and rallying.

The SVT Focus Competition concept builds on the already impressive production model, illustrating how enthusiasts can transform it into a competitive track car. “The SVT Focus is race-ready right out of the box for many events, especially autocross,” said Scarpello. “But with the right modifications, it can achieve even greater performance. This concept showcases what’s possible when you take it to the next level.”

Lightweight and Track-Ready
The Competition concept starts by trimming down weight to improve power-to-weight ratio. By removing sound insulation, the radio, air conditioning, and rear seats, the car sheds nearly 150 pounds. Additional enhancements include a carbon fiber hood, lightweight racing seats, and performance wheels, bringing the car’s weight down to approximately 2,500 pounds—250 pounds lighter than the stock version. These reductions yield a 10% improvement in power-to-weight ratio.

High-Performance DNA
Built on the solid foundation of the production SVT Focus, the concept emphasizes its potential for grassroots racing. With its 170-horsepower 2.0L SVT Zetec DOHC engine, 145 lb.-ft. of torque, and a 6-speed manual transmission, the SVT Focus boasts performance features like upgraded brakes, a tuned suspension, and 17-inch wheels with high-performance tires—all for an MSRP of $17,995.

“The SVT Focus is a stellar starting point for motorsports enthusiasts,” Scarpello added. “With its exceptional power curve, incredible brakes, and outstanding chassis, it delivers unmatched performance in its price range.”

A Collaborative Effort with Aftermarket Innovators
The Competition concept is a product of SVT’s ongoing “Partners in Performance” program, which began with the 2000 SVT Mustang Cobra R and expanded through the Ford-SEMA Technology Initiative. Showcasing aftermarket ingenuity, the concept integrates components from leading performance brands, including:

  • Borla Cat-Back Hi-Flow Exhaust: Boosted engine output

  • Energy Suspension Polyurethane Bushings: Enhanced handling precision

  • Bilstein Dampers and Eibach Springs: Optimized body control

  • OZ Racing Wheels and Continental Tires: Reduced unsprung mass and improved grip

  • Dyna-Batt Lightweight Battery: Superior weight distribution

  • B&M Short-Throw Shifter: Crisper, more precise shifting

  • Sparco Seats: Better weight savings and lateral support

Also on display at the event is the yellow SVT Focus “SEMA” project car, first revealed at the 2001 SEMA Show. This project marked the debut of an SVT vehicle developed in collaboration with the Ford-SEMA Technology Initiative, with the SVT Focus Competition concept as its successor.

“Our aftermarket partners are key to helping customers personalize and enhance their vehicles,” Scarpello concluded. “The SVT Focus Competition is a testament to what’s possible when you combine a solid platform with the best in aftermarket innovation.”
